The introduction and spread of non-native, invasive fish species in freshwater and marine environments is a worldwide problem that is increasing rapidly in frequency.

Professor Dr. Carlos Fernández-Delgado at the University of Cordoba initiated the first restoration of a lake in Andalusia, Laguna de Zóñar. The objective was to enable the endangered duck species Oxyura leucocephala and other duck species to return to the lake by eradicating the carp population with rotenone. The result is overwhelming. Today, after the eradication in 2006, around 120 numbers of Oxyura leucocephala have returned to the lake.
