Rotenon 2009

VESO have submitted a full application dossier to the competent authority HSE, Health and Safety Executive, in England for a new 5% rotenone formulation to be used as a piscicide only. HSE have accepted the dossier as complete.

The assessment of the application will start during 2009 and an EU-approval can be expected in 2010-2011. In the meantime, the present formulation containing 2,5% rotenone and 2,5% PBO is allowed to be used as before according to local, country specific approvals.

Please read;
”COMMISSION REGULATION (EC) No 1849/2006 of 14 December 2006”

First page, No (3) ..... .It is therefore appropriate to allow the substances covered by the accepted dossiers to remain on the market after 1 September 2006, until they are assessed under the 10-year review programme.

New formulation.
The reason for developing a new 5 % formulation is the expected banning of PBO in aquatic systems in the US.

Both formulations have the same biological activity as piscicide at equal dosages and almost the same risks for the environment.

The active ingredient of CFT Legumine is rotenone, with 5% of the formulation. Other ingredients are; methyl pyrrolidone, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, fatty acid esters, and polyethylene glycols. These compounds are used to solve the Cubé resin, containing rotenone, and help the rotenone mix with water. A very small amount of trace compounds can also be detected, such as naphthalene, substituted benzenes and hexanol. These traces are residues from the extraction of the Leguminosae plants Derris sp. or Lonchocarpus nicou

None of the compounds identified are considered persistent in the environment nor will they bioaccumulate. They are rapidly biodegraded, hydrolyzed and/or degraded by sunlight.

Both formulations of CFT Legumine have been developed with the objective to meet the demand on more environmental and handling safe products.
